Traitor Commissar and Ogryn Bodyguard

Ok, so I fibbed. There are no heroes in this post. I know, I know, I promised - My only excuse is that I got carried away finishing these two guys for our game this past weekend and the other ones got bumped.

So, here's a traitor commissar and his Ogryn bodyguard from the 'Traitor Command' expansion.

I really don't know how a traitor commissar 'works' in the 40K universe. Aren't commissars supposed to be the ones who bring order from chaos? Well, this doesn't work when Chaos is signing your paycheque. Hmm. Perhaps the best way to peg him is to just think of him as a cheerleader for the Ruinous Powers. That is if cheerleading means executing the nearest traitor guardsman for spelling Khorne incorrectly, or for not saluting with the proper tentacle. I dunno, it sounds like a pretty thankless job to me.

Anyhoo, the Chaos Commissar's badassery is further enhanced by him having a hulking Ogryn as his bodyguard.

'It's great for opening cans but lousy for texting...'
'Well, it's great for opening jam jars, but lousy for texting...'

As you can see this poor fella's been skewered by a huge piece of wrought iron - but he's obviously making the best of it. Sure, it looks very uncomfortable, but it's probably quite handy for hanging laundry on.

'More socks for the sock god! More starch for the starch throne!'

A very fun set of models which help add further character to our games of Blackstone Fortress.

Next time: Some heroes. No, really!

Denizens of Blackstone Fortress from the Core Box

 Hi All,

As I've been banging on about the heroes of Blackstone Fortress, I thought it fair to feature some of the denizens who creep its halls and vaults.

This group is what you receive in Blackstone Fortress' core box set. Similar to the protagonists, I kept myself to a fairly rigorous timeline to get them on the table, so the paintwork was fast and furious.

Traitor Guardsmen

I really like these figures as they're so varied and characterful. I decided to use fairly punchy colours for their armour in order to make them easy to identify on the tabletop. I did one group in yellow, and, in honour of Barks' Pinkstone Fortress motif, another squad in lurid Pepto-Bismol pink. Fun!

Ur-Guls

I liked how other painters have done the Ur-Guls' claws in spooky contrasting tones, so I gave it a whirl as well. The well-defined musculature on these guys make a great surface for using GW's Contrast paints. Nasty little blighters in the game.

Spindle Drones

I sorta see these as the white blood cells of the Fortress, being as they are indigenous to the station and come out when things need 'attending to'. Sort of like a malicious version of Google Home.  As such, I kept them sorta techie and simple.

Beastmen

My first fantasy army was Beastmen so I'm rather fond of these guys.

Baahahaa!

Rogue Psykers

A little incongruous with the ball and chain thing. Do they always have these on? Why? I would have preferred them just floating using those clear acrylic flying pegs. Nonetheless, I still like how these look overall.

Negavolt Cultists

These guys are a bit of a howl. Sort of a S&M version of your power utility guy. Armed with 'Electro Goads'. Yeeash. Sounds nasty.

Obsideous Mallex & Chaos Space Marines

When I was working on these figures I realized that, after all these years of collecting GW stuff, these are the first Chaos Marines I've ever painted. How'd that happen? No matter, I quite enjoyed working on them. Kept the colour pallet fairly stripped-down and simple.

And to lead all these miscreants is our main villain, the top dog, the head honcho. AND queue the ridiculous villain name: 'Obsideous Mallex'. Really? This guy sounds like he was a wash-out from a Sith Lord  training camp. Why can't these guys be called something like 'Norm' or 'Bill'? I think it would be quite menacing to face off against a huge chaos marine named Jeremy.

So there you have it, a nice mob of baddies to mess with our intrepid heroes.

Hmm, speaking of which. Next up: More Heroes for Blackstone Fortress - Weee!

Have a great week everyone!

Second Group of Heroes for Blackstone Fortress

Hi All!

Whew, it's been a hot one in the prairies these past few weeks. To be honest I really don't mind as I know we'll be complaining about the cold before we know it. I just wish we could bottle up this heat up and dole it out over the winter...

Okay! Here are another four intrepid adventurers from the Blackstone Fortress base set. Today we have:

Amallyn Shadowguide the Eldar Ranger.

UR-025, the mysterious robot with a dark (and very ancient) past.

Pious Vorne, the loonbag Imperial cult acolyte sporting her favourite accessory, a chainsaw/flamethrower(!).

And, Rein & Raus, the intrepid twin Ratling scouts.

Similar to the last batch, I kept these to an hour each for painting as I wanted to get them ready for gaming in a timely fashion. Most turned out okay, but a few suffered by the rushed brushwork (the the off-white armour of Amallyn and UR-025 look incredibly bland here - there is some shading there, honest!). Nevertheless, they're done and ready for mayhem in the Fortress.

Speaking of which, next up I'll feature some of the nasty denizens of Blackstone Fortress.

Have a great week everyone!

Blackstone Fortress: First Group of Heroes

For me, one of the nice things that has come out of these strange times is re-connecting with distant friends via online tools like Zoom, Google Meet and FaceTime.

Earlier this summer Greg put on a brilliant set of sessions which featured the GW stand-alone game 'The Burning of Prospero'.  The defined area map-tiles of that game really lend itself well to online play and so, encouraged by Greg's efforts and other talented hobbyists, like Barks, I thought I might take a stab at something similar using Blackstone Fortress.

As a result, over the past month or so I've been madly painting all the figures and hosting a few sessions of the game for friends. It really is a fun game and it's done a great job in getting me out of the painting doldrums, which often sets in after the hurly burly of the Painting Challenge.

Anyway, I thought it high time that I post a few images of the figures that come in the base game. So here are the first group of four heroes that I did up.

From left to right these are Espern Locarno, Janus Draik, Taddeus the Purifier and Dayak Grehk the Kroot mercenary.

All the miniatures in the set are plastic multi-part, push-fit figures, and I have to say they are absolutely amazing models. Wonderful detail, great character and really a breeze to put together - I doff my hat to the designers at GW as they really hit it out of the park with these minis.

As I wanted to get up and running with the game really quickly, I set a goal that I wouldn't spend more than 60 minutes painting any one of the miniatures. I found the YouTube tutorials from Midwinter Miniatures to be very helpful, and for the most part I managed to keep to my target - blocking-in with bold colours, using lots of washes and amping them up with some punchy highlights.

This all being said, I did spend a bit of extra time on the bases to add some visual interest with rusting I beams, broken piping and bits of detritus. I kept the basing colour pallet similar to my other 40/30K stuff so they could be used in those games as well.

I'll post the next four heroes sometime soon and then feature some of the creepy denizens of Blackstone Fortress.

Thanks for dropping by and have a great week!

2mm Napoleonic Terrain and Units for Waterloo

Hi All!

Last summer I began a 2mm Napoleonic project using 3D designs sourced from Forward March Studios. During that initial burst of productivity I managed to create two decent sized forces, one for the French and another depicting the Anglo/Portuguese of the Peninsula.

As June 18th marked the anniversary of Waterloo I thought it would be fun to revisit this project and add a few more units and terrain specific to that campaign.

After snooping around, I picked up a batch of building sets from Brigade Models which depict several locations that are iconic to that battlefield. So what we have here is the chateau of Hougoumont, the walled farm of La Haie Sainte, the church at Plancenoit and the inn of La Belle Alliance. Everything except La Belle Alliance has been based on 4" MDF squares as I wanted each base to act as a 'sector' for gaming purposes.

For Hougoumont and La Haie Sainte I wanted to include their formal gardens and orchards as they played an important role in the battle. For the garden walls I used thin plastic sheeting and for the hedges I glued down trimmed figure packing foam (the stuff you find in blister packaging) which I thinly coated with Liquitex before painting.

The village of Plancenoit became a critical battle within a battle. I have the first base done depicting the village churchyard. Historically the possession of the churchyard seesawed between the Prussians and French throughout the late afternoon - a real charnel house. I plan to add another two bases to better reflect the entire footprint of the village.

Plancenoit's churchyard mocked up with some extra buildings and plasticard bits.

Finally, the inn La Belle Alliance. Napoleon used the inn as his headquarters the morning before the battle and it was nearby to this location that Blucher, the commander of the Prussian forces, met up with Wellington in the evening of the 18th upon their victory over the French.

La Belle Alliance with a penny to give a sense of scale.
And, dug up from the photo archives, here I am at La Belle Alliance, er, Le Caillou  when we visited the battlefield in 2008.

For La Haie Sainte's formal orchard, and for the odd individual tree here and there, I decided to create my own from bits found around the hobby desk. After a bit of experimenting, I used the same packing foam I used for the hedges and trimmed them into roundish shapes using small topiary scissors.

I then pierced the foam with 1/2" brad nails dipped in hot glue to serve as the tree trunks. Once they were set up I coated the foam in Liquitex and then painted them up using craft paints.

There you go, fast and easy microscale trees.

I also added a few more units to my British force, battalions in line, column and square.

Here's a unit of British infantry in column. It's interesting that the Brits had their colour party positioned in the center of their formation as opposed to the French, who had their's leading from the front.

Here is a side-by-side comparison of two differing column formations. See how the French formation is more compact due to the three-rank doctrine? Neat. To me this is one of the highlights of doing this in 2mm as one can convey, basically in 1:1 scale, the wide variety of formations that were used by the various powers. Pretty cool, eh!?

The same goes for the line formations. In this scale we can see the British two-rank doctrine creates a formation that is substantially longer than an equivalent sized French unit in three ranks. You can see that unit discipline and firepower is the focus here.

Here is a British battalion drawn up in square formation.

And finally, you may have noticed the smoke markers that I've used in some of the previous photos. I've discovered that in large games we often need a visual reminder of what units have fired from those who've not, so I had these MDF markers made up by Byron over at Northern Lights Terrain based on some sketches I bodged together.

The markers are simply three irregular shaped layers of MDF glued together to give the impression of gun smoke. I find that they're easier (and less messy) to use than pillow ticking.

There you have it! Thanks for sticking it out to the end. These were a lot of fun to work on and I'm looking forward to using these when we can all get back together to game in-person.

Remember, be excellent to each other.
