Traitor Commissar and Ogryn Bodyguard

Ok, so I fibbed. There are no heroes in this post. I know, I know, I promised - My only excuse is that I got carried away finishing these two guys for our game this past weekend and the other ones got bumped.

So, here's a traitor commissar and his Ogryn bodyguard from the 'Traitor Command' expansion.

I really don't know how a traitor commissar 'works' in the 40K universe. Aren't commissars supposed to be the ones who bring order from chaos? Well, this doesn't work when Chaos is signing your paycheque. Hmm. Perhaps the best way to peg him is to just think of him as a cheerleader for the Ruinous Powers. That is if cheerleading means executing the nearest traitor guardsman for spelling Khorne incorrectly, or for not saluting with the proper tentacle. I dunno, it sounds like a pretty thankless job to me.

Anyhoo, the Chaos Commissar's badassery is further enhanced by him having a hulking Ogryn as his bodyguard.

'It's great for opening cans but lousy for texting...'
'Well, it's great for opening jam jars, but lousy for texting...'

As you can see this poor fella's been skewered by a huge piece of wrought iron - but he's obviously making the best of it. Sure, it looks very uncomfortable, but it's probably quite handy for hanging laundry on.

'More socks for the sock god! More starch for the starch throne!'

A very fun set of models which help add further character to our games of Blackstone Fortress.

Next time: Some heroes. No, really!

    1. Thanks Peter. Yes you and Jeremy made fairly short work of them. Thus is the fate of newly painted minis. :)

  4. Two more excellent figures! I am curious how your doing your photos with the black background? Are you using a black cloth. I've tended to use the grey from my lightbox, but the black sure does make the miniatures pop!

    1. Thanks Terry. In regards to the photos I use a lightbox with a black velvet dropcloth set behind the minis. I then use Photoshop/GIMP to touch up the background. As you say, I find it helps draw the eye to the miniatures, similar to how a jeweler will use black velvet to display items.

    2. Makes sense! Will need to visit a fabric store in the near future. My lightbox came with the grey & blue backdrop.

  6. Great looking pair of baddies! The commisar has been tempted by the dark side and is now enjoying his corruption, I guess it's no different for sanctimonious space marines becoming chaos marines? Lovely finish!

    1. I like how you roll Iain. 'You see, we all just need to just relax and enjoy our corruption.' Really, words to live by. ;)

  9. I wondered about the traitor commissar too - how could THAT happen... then I started listening to the first few Horus Heresy audiobooks while painting earlier this year - which kind of tracks the slow descent into corruption of Horus - the EMPEROR'S CHODEN SON!? and some of the other Primarchs and legions... and then it all made a lot more sense. I mean, if marines - which were likewise thought incorruptible, why not commissars?

And with any sort of extremism, when the pendulum swings... you know, like that anarchist-enviro-punk kid you knew in high school that grew up to be a lawyer for an oil company and now sports Sask Party signs on their lawn and bitches about all the "libtards" and complains incessantly about all these damned millenials doing... well... all the SAME DAMNED THING THEY DID when they were a teenager...

Anyway, LOVE you take on these two figures!

We were just starting the Quest for the Ritual Chamber in Traitor Command when we had to shelve the BSF campaign for a bit a month ago. Really hope we can get back at it sometime this fall!

    1. Yeah, you're absolutely right Tim. Actually it would be the upper echelon like the commissars, officers, etc. that would be Chaos' first targets for corruption. Love the HH books btw (well the ones written by adults).

Hope your group can get back into BSF soon. We're really enjoying our time with it.

  11. I see the commissars as political leaders, making sure that the killing is done in a proper way and no heresy (wrong kind of heresy that is) is allowed. Emperor is god, so is Khorne, they need to be worshipped in a proper way, on a battlefield, too. But I'm not expert of WH40K (or 30K) lore.
