The Sword Drawn - The 3rd Annual Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge

January 2013 will mark the 310th anniversary of the attack of the 47 Ronin. A near mythical event in Japanese culture, the 47 Rōnin have come to represent the virtues of loyalty, honour, sacrifice and persistence (and perhaps a good dose of revenge). While a detailed account can be read here, I will outline the basic story.

In 1701 a young provincial daimyo (Lord Asano) was being instructed in court etiquette by an shogunate courtier in preparation for a visit by the Shogun's emissaries. The courtier, being a nasty sort, relished in bating the daimyo, repeatedly insulting him for his uncouth country manners. Lord Asano, ultimately provoked beyond endurance, flew into a rage and injured the courtier on shogunate grounds. This was seen as a grave crime. The daimyo was ordered to commit seppuku (ritual suicide) to which he immediately complied. Asano's family was degraded, his lands made forfeit and his household samurai reduced to leaderless warriors - known as rōnin. Nonetheless, fourty-seven of these rōnin vowed to wash the stain from their master's honour and kill the pompous courtier who had caused his death. They prepared and waited for two years, many even taking odd jobs near the courtier's residence. Finally when the moment seemed right they attacked the courtier's grounds, slew his bodyguards and took his head. The rōnin then made their way to the gravesite of their master where they placed the washed and perfumed courtier's head upon his grave in final absolution. Upon hearing of the event, the Shogun was so impressed by this act of selfless devotion that he allowed them the honour to commit seppuku and be interred alongside their master (as opposed to being summarily executed as common criminals). Their gravesites at Sengaku-ji remains a venerated shrine in Japan to this day.

Honour, sacrifice, persistence and perhaps a bit of revenge? I think this sounds like a great recipe for:

 The 3rd Annual
Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge

The Rules

The Challenge will extend from 12:01 am December 20th through to the first day of Spring, 12:01 am March 20th.
Figures can be prepared and primed prior to the start date (Dec 20th), but no colour can be applied until the 20th. In order to be scored the figures have to be based and groundwork completed. The figures have to be painted by you. The honour system will be followed in the completion and entry of figures to the Challenge. Great dishonour goes upon anyone who shames themselves in the time-honoured craft of painting toy soldiers!
The subject matter can be in any scale, but must be historical in nature.
In order to be scored, photos of all figures/units along with a short descriptive note must be submitted to me for posting on the Analogue Hobbies blog. Up-to-date scoring will be maintained on the main page.
The Judge (me) will participate, but my score will not have any standing in the Challenge.

The Scoring
6mm foot figure = 0.5 point
6mm mounted figure, artillery piece or crew served weapon = 1 pts
6mm vehicle = 2
points
10mm foot figure = 1 point

54mm mounted figures, artillery piee or crew served weapon = 20 pts
54mm vehicle, limber, etc. = 30 pts
Other scales and miscellaneous models/figures will be scored on a submission-by-submission basis.

The Glory
As with last year there will be prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd along with recognition for People's Choice, Challenger's Choice, Sarah's Choice and Judge's Choice.

The Catch

Ah yes, the catch, the catch. Last year's entrance fee was a painted 28mm Viking and so in keeping with the 47 Ronin theme, the shakedown, er, 'entrance fee' for this year's Challenge will be a single 28mm Samurai figure supplied and painted by the entrant. (This miniature can be submitted any time up until the end of the Challenge.) To generate a little positive karma (I can certainly use it), for each figure I receive I will donate $5 to the Saskatchewan branch of the  Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

There you have it. If you're interested in joining our merry band of brush-jockeys please drop me a note, or leave a comment expressing your interest. Spots are limited so get your name in soon!

    1. Great to have you aboard again Dave!

This year I decided to forego shipping a figure out to each Challenger (it was very time consuming and a bit expensive on the whole) and request instead that people source the Samurai model themselves. Instead of paying money to Canada Post I'd rather give it to the SPCA.

  3. I'm tempted to join in, but I doubt I'd place very highly unless my fatigue levels improve - at the moment my productivity is right down.

It's a bit annoying for me that it's historicals only - if you were allowing SciFi I could have tried to clear that part of my leadpile.

    1. Ah, Tamsin, just set your own personal painting goal and work towards that. That's what many have done in previous Challenges and it worked quite well for them.

Sorry to annoy - I focus the Challenge on historicals as I find there are enough events out there for sci-fi and fantasy.

    2. No need to be sorry. I can fully appreciate the emphasis on historicals, and I do have plenty of those beggars to paint up in addition to my SF stuff, so count me in. I certainly have no ambitions to match the output of Kent and Ray right now, but if my fatigue levels improve then who knows?

I've also got a couple of old (mid/late 1980s) Citadel Samurai figures I can do as my contribution to the 47 Ronin.

  5. Hey Curt,
Put me down as an 'unofficial entrant' if thats possible? - I am currently busy with Empire of the Dead stuff which is perhaps pseudo historic(?), but will no doubt shortly be embarking on a lengthy period of painting LOTR/Hobbit stuff and as much as I kid myself it really happened!? ;-) I know thats stretching things a bit ! (Tolkien did intend it as an "alternative history" afterall...)
I have a few bits and bobs of FoW stuff I want to complete but when I'll get round to them, I'm not sure.

I wish you all the best for competition, I know its no small amount of work for you!

    1. You have a spot reserved Scott! I'm sorely tempted to allow models from 'The Hobbit' as many now consider Tolkien's work part of English cultural history (and I love it as well).

Let me ponder that. If others wish to chip in please feel free.

    4. LOL, yes indeed...
I'm happy to stick with humanoids ... I was having a bit of a think about it, and if you leave out the obvious monsters, so much of MiddleEarth parallels out own historical forces anyway:
      Rohan - Anglo-Saxon
      Gondor - 'Late Medieval'
      Harad - Saracens
Goblin King - Henry VIII ;-)
      etc etc...

Was there any particular scale or brand of samurai you are after?

      Delete
    5. Ha! I can totally see Henry VIII as the Goblin King!

...and we all know that the lovely Cate was both Galadriel and Elizabeth!

As for the Samurai, 28mm of any manufacturer would be great. Thanks!

I paint on mood so I'm in fact curious to see what I will do too! Possibilities are Arabs, ACW, ECW, Successors, WWII, SCW, Arthurian, FIW, SYW, Naps, Samurai, Italian Wars and.. and.. you see my rather ridiculous amount of projects and my complete and utter failure as a disciplined and organized painter. 2. The ironclads are mostly Thoroughbred but there will be a few from Bay Area Yards also.

The 1/1200's are Napoleonic models from Langton, which I think are the best miniatures on the market - they're a challenge to build, paint and rig, but boy do they look good on the table top.

    1. Too bad Kent, we'll miss last year's blistering pace that you set for us but I completely understand.

    2. Sad that one of the big players is bowing out, will that make it 'one Ray to rule them all'?

  36. Hi Curt, am I too late to get in on this? Reading last years entries was highly entertaining!

I'm away to start up some 15mm ACW and have some Punic Wars and Dark Age stuff on the go.

  38. HI Curt,

More than willing to try again this year. I will start priming material just now. I'll email you over the next few days if there is space in the lists again.

    Cheers,

  40. After my Brothers(Phil) output last year I'm sorely tempted to join in if only to try and keep my motivation over winter. I'm fairly sure I'll not keep up with him but a bit o Brotherly rivalry could be fun.

Whats the stance on quasi-historicals? ie Steampunk or Wierd WW2?

    1. Good to hear from you Gharak. I'd be delighted to have you join us. Hmm, we allowed Pulp Adventure last year... Let's take it entry-by-entry. As long as it doesn't venture to much into sci-fi I'll be OK with it.

Drop me an email at curtcampbell(at)mac(dot)com so we can chat.

    2. Excellent, I may actually get round to painting that Anglo Dane Warband I bought to fight my brothers Vikings he finished last year.

  41. Hi Curt. I will not take part this time out, but wish to register my interest for next year, should you hold one again. I would be looking, not to win or place, as I am not a fast painter, but to use it as motivation to push me into painting more frequently.

Just out of curiosity only. Will you count 10mm figures as 6mm or 15mm for points purposes (or just ban them for simplicity).

    All the best Clint

    1. Clint, I'll look forward to having you in a future challenge.

I'm thinking that 10mm will probably settle in at 1.5, 3 and 5 points respectively.

      Thanks for your interest!

  42. Hi Curt,

I would love to enter the challenge but I have no samurai to give in and don't want to order a set of four or five miniatures...
    :-(

Therefore good luck to all contenders!
I'll wait for next year's challenge.

    Cheers

  44. That's it!!

We've hit the threshold for participants and so I regret to say that I'll not be able to take on any more painters for this year's Challenge.

I'd like to thank everyone for the excellent response. It looks that the Challenge will see a wide range of scales and subjects from hobbyists all over the world. I'm really looking forward to it!

For those who are visiting, please remember to check back over the next few months to see the participants' progress, give accolades and shout out encouragement!

    Thank you!

    Curt

  46. G'day Curt,

Room for an Aussie mate? Can't have the Kiwis showing us up! I have a pile of 15 and 28mm Napoleonics, 28mm fuzzy wuzzies and others all needing love...

    Cheers,

  48. Last year when I watched this I wasn't a painter. This year I am, but I'm not good enough or fast enough to compete. But next year I hope to participate. Wishing everyone the best!

    1. Not fast enough, maybe, but not good enough?!?!?! Anne, the quality of your painting puts the rest of us to shame :)

    2. Not good enough? Phooey :D

You're better than me, and I entered last year!

    3. Anne, you shouldn't sell yourself short. Your work is very good and besides the Challenge is as much about meeting your personal goals as trouncing Ray (though we all know that is very laudable aspiration in of itself). I do hope you join us for our next one!

  49. Sign me in.

I still have a 28mm viking sitting here which is at last undercoated (*very sheepish grin* - sorry it's taken so long!), so I'll do my best to get that off to you BEFORE the start deadline :D

    1. The Revenge of the Pumpkin-Head Samurai. It's sorta like Ichabod meets Kagemusha! Groovy.

Actually, any manufacturer is fine (though I admittedly have a sweet spot for the Perry castings...).

  53. For those of us who didn't think of it before the jump off, can we be armed retainers/comic relief/extras, for our own painting accountability?

I'm applying your rules to my own output this winter, trying to motivate myself to finish, with a reasonable goal of 200 points and an ambitious one of 300!

    1. That is a brilliant idea Rob. If I could I'd take on any who wanted to participate but my sanity dictates a limit. I think its awesome having others painting in pace as a common painting challenge. Good luck to you and I'll be following your progress.

    2. That's greatly appreciated, though you may have to come up with some alternate points for things like terrain. Help me keep on keeping on!
