From AnneO'L: 28mm Cowboys & Thief (17 points)

Anne submits her fist non-thematic entry with this brilliant cowboy vignette and an elf thief.

From Anne:
I began painting miniatures a little over a year and a half ago and for me, the greatest part of the Challenge is not the acquisition of points, rather it is to push myself as a painter by doing things I have never done before.
These are 25mm figures from Knuckleduster and I had a grand time painting them.  They are smaller than the 28mm heroic figures I generally paint and have less detail. Therefor I had to adjust my technique somewhat to accommodate that. They required more contrast than I am used to using and they required the use of washes which is something I never use.  The main shortcoming on these figures is that I did not push the highlights high enough in several places. Hopefully, I will do a better job on the next batch of Knuckleduster figures I submit.
This is a 28mm heroic figure from Reaper Miniatures. It is a metal miniature and was sculpted by Bobby Jackson.  You may notice that the face is a different colour than the hands.  This is an elf thief and Bobby sculpted a highly stylized mask on the face. I chose to paint it in a dark greyscale to emphasize those pronounced features.  I painted the dagger a glowing green as I wanted to try doing Object Source Lighting. You can see this as the green glow that is transmitted from the dagger onto the side of the cloak. I was a bit heavy handed with the technique, which should be more subtle.  On the back of the cloak, I painted some freehand blue flames. While this looks fine on a table top, it is too sloppy for photography. I failed to highlight within the flames and I did not have enough distinction between layers. However, this was a first attempt and I learned something from it.

Wonderful stuff Anne! I always enjoy seeing your work as you have a very vibrant, high-contrast style. Your first attempt at source lighting is quite good, especially as it can be a tricky effect to pull off. As a suggestion, I find 'source lighting' usually works best when the figure is painted in muted 'shadow' tones in order to set up a better context for the chosen light source. I also really like the blue flames on the back of the thief's cloak. I find it reminiscent of  some of the psychedelic album covers of the 70s (as you can tell, I spent way too much time in my parents' basement listening to the hi-fi) - very cool.

These three figures will give Anne as base of 15 points but I'm adding a couple more for the vignette and paint effects. Great stuff Anne and I look forward to your coming entries!

From DaveD: 28mm Female Gunslinger, Her Vanquished Foes & The Blacksmith (45 points)

From Dave:
I am returning from my sick bed...I have been laid very low - as verge of being hosptilised with bronchitis.. gawd its been a bad do.
Anyway I have managed to prop myself up at the paint desk the last day and stopped coughing enough to wield a brush. So back with few Old West stuff the guys at the club have provided me for the games we have going on.
So first up we have Dixon Miniatures portable field forge set from thier ACW range - just something to add a little flavour - and of course another tough little character, the farrier.

The the poor old boys picked on the wrong target here, a new female gunslinger character from Black Scorpion, and the casualties by Knuckleduster.

Hopefully I will get time now to go through the backlog of entries I have not viewed!
Sorry to hear you weren't feeling well Dave, but I'm very happy that you're on the mend. The absence of your entries and comments was noted here at AH.

That Gunfightrix is the bomb! I can just hear her saying, "I can give you some sweet, sweet peppermint or a big can of whoopass. Oh dear, it appears I'm right out of peppermint..."

That ferrier is excellent as well. The forge is certainly a nice piece of kit, but the horse's eyes makes him look like he's about to kick that fella right into orbit.

This collection will give Dave 45 points. Welcome back!

From DaveD: 28mm Cowboys, Mexicans & Indians (88 points)

From Dave:
So it has been crack on time - all 28mm stuff . Clearing out the remainder of the unpainted for the Old West . With the campaign action starting next week some of them are going to be needed sharpish - one of the guys managed to role having his motley crew in the " Indian Territories" - so first up we have the  "Davaches Warband"  out for trouble and the only force guaranteed to unite the warring factions in the territiry.  These 9 figures are all by Artizan Designs  - the Apaches sets.
Also the Trail Boss by Artizan I can't praise the Artizan Old West figures enough they have all been a joy to paint.
Next up the completion of the "Banditos" set and one of their victims - again all by Knuckleduster.

Also another recreation of the "The retired Marshal" by Crusader Miniatures. I already have one in the collection. I have done this one as as present for a friend. Method in the madness of course as it will start his Old West collection.

Finally a mount for one of last years entries (The Man With No Name") - A mule from Irregular Miniatures. They are a great source for animals. This one has had a blanket added from greenstuff , and twisted copper wire "rope" bridle made. Don't go  frightening  the mule - you may have to apologise - and you know what that means - Get 3 coffins ready.....

This now completes  painting all the outstanding Old West  miniatures  - and you  know what that means ... I will have to buy some more!!!

Now what to do next ......
Excellent work Dave! I love the pattern on the ponchos and you just can't deny Mr. Cogburn...

These rootin' tootin' bad lads will give Dave 88 points. YeeHaw!

From DaveD: 28mm Banditos (15 points)

From Dave:
Here we have 3 28mm Banditos to add to my Old West collection ready to head of the town of Serenity Flatts to cause trouble. They are by the Knuckleduster Miniatures range. The don't have detail and crisp castings of some other manufactures, and on first look i was abit disappointed but the undercoat really brought them to life.
I think these lads have a great character in them - i just can't get the Mexican music out of my head...

The Old West collection started as a slight distraction last year and has been subject to "wargamers mission creep" it was supposed ot 10--20 figures tops. It's heading for 100 figures , 20 buildings , stagecoaches, a train etc with more to follow. I will have some plains indians along later. It has caught on down at the local games club - with 5 guys having signed up to a full campaigning season next year -- if anyone is interested in following the madness I have created a seperate blog page this Wild West world!

Great stuff Dave. I love this project and always enjoy reading about each new addition to your 'Serenity Flatts' collection (the steam train is particularly fine, I think).

These lads will give Dave 15 points, marking his official entry on the Challenge books. Excellent!

From MilesR: War of 1812 US Regular Infantry (180 points)

Miles sends in another 'man-sized' US Regular infantry battalion for his new War of 1812 project.

Like the rest of his collection to-date, these are 28mm Knuckleduster figures. Miles has mentioned on his blog that while the figures are not as finely sculpted as what you may find with some other ranges they are very characterful and paint-up well.

I'm looking forward to a group shot in a couple months to see how this collection looks then. It will be impressive.

So that's another 36 figures under the belt, giving Miles 180 points. Just enough to pip Ray!

This will make three full units that he has completed for this project in under a month. Excellent work, Miles! To me, this is what The Challenge is all about: making significant inroads on those new, existing or languishing projects - and having a little extra fun doing it. Very cool stuff.

From MilesR: War of 1812 US Regular Infantry, Part II (90 points)

Here we have the second half of Miles' American battalion for his 1812 project, with 18 figures nicely topping it up to full strength.

That is a great 'man-sized' battalion! These are 28mm Knuckleduster figures. Hey, I just noticed, where is Old Glory? What flags are you going to use for these, Miles?

These 18 figures will give Miles another 90 points to add his tally. Well done - they look great!
